The most common print sizes are 4 x 6, 5 x 7, and 8 x 10 and should be printed at 300dpi. DPI stands for Dots Per Inch and 300dpi is the industry standard for producing quality prints from digitized photos. The DPI helps to determine how many pixels wide/tall the digitized photo should be.
For example, a 4" x 6" digitized photo at 300dpi would mean (4 x 300 = 1,200 pixels) by (6 x 300 = 1,800 pixels). In this example, for a decent quality print at 4" x 6," the pixel resolution should be at least 1,200 x 1,800 which is easy to achieve with most scanners.
If however you don't have the original photo and all you have is a 600 x 900 pixel digital image (or other small size), FORMA Foto Works can upscale it 2x using Photoshop to bring it to a higher resolution of 1,200 x 1,800 ensuring a higher quality print.
Another thing to note is that most standard computer screen resolutions are only 72dpi, so even if the digital photo looks fine on a computer screen, it's important for the resolution to be higher at 300dpi if you are planning on printing it.
